Hamden Police Send Alert with Crime Prevention Tips for the Holiday Season

The Hamden Police Department would like to provide crime prevention tips for the holiday season.

  • When shopping, park your vehicle in a highly illuminated area.
  • When returning to your vehicle, look inside before entering.
  • When walking to your vehicle, have your keys accessible. You want to unlock the door to your vehicle as quickly as possible.
  • Place purchased items in the locked trunk of your vehicle. These items should not be in plain view.
  • Do not leave your purse/wallet, money, cell phone or other electronic equipment inside of the vehicle.
  • If you are the victim of a robbery, don’t resist. Contact the police (911) immediately.
  • Carry only the credit cards you need and avoid carrying a large amount of money.
  • Please remember to lock your vehicle at all times whether shopping or parked at home.

Tip nets 2 drug suspects in Central El Paso traffic stop

El Paso County sheriff’s investigators arrested two men on drug charges Tuesday in Central El Paso following an anonymous tip, officials said.

Jovan Ramos and Roberto Daniel Saavedra were arrested on drug possession charges during a traffic stop at Arizona Avenue and Noble Street, sheriff’s officials said.

During a search of a vehicle, investigators found a pound of hydroponic marijuana, 21 grams of cocaine and a gram of the prescription drug Adderall, officials said.

LaSalle-Peru school safety measure introduces anonymous tips

LaSalle-Peru Township High School (LPHS) has launched an anonymous tip system for the new school year that will allow the community to report situations via text message or through an app, according to a release from the school.

The school has employed tip411, a tool created by Citizen Observer, which will facilitate anonymous two-way conversations. Those wishing to use the system can download the LP tip411 app, available for both iPhone and Android, in order to submit messages, photos and videos. The system is also accessible through text message. Users can direct their tip to 847411, starting the message with “CAVALIERS.”

According to LPHS, the tips are completely anonymous; all information that could identify a user is stripped before the message is sent to authorities. Tips sent through tip411 are sent and received in real time. The system is already in place in more than 1,200 communities throughout the country.

The school noted that it has implemented the tip system in a bid to keep students, staff and visitors as safe as possible, and that it believes tip411 will better enable communication and the speed with which the school can address situations.

Police turning to technology to increase connection with people they serve

The Pelham Police Department is turning to an innovative new app to connect with people, and the department believes it’s the first in the area to use it.

“The app just takes our community policing to the next level,” said Sgt. Brian Barbato of the Pelham Police Department.

The Pelham PD app launched earlier this month. Designed by the Citizen Observer Program, it sends instant alerts to users on emergencies, road closures and press releases.

“People have loved it so far. We’ve got a lot of positive feedback from it. People love the interaction with the police department. They love to know what’s going on in their community,” said Barbato.

It also allows people to sends tips directly to the police dispatcher.

“And you can have a back and forth conversation with that dispatcher and then he or she can relay that information to the officers working the road,” said Barbato.

“These tips that can come in through the app are completely anonymous. We don’t have any IP addresses attached to it,” added Lt. Anne Perriello of Pelham police.
